POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:                GSLE Specialist – Camp

DEPARTMENT:        Program/Girl Scout leadership Experience

REPORTS TO:          GSLE Manager, Camp Pathway

 

Summary: The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) Specialist for camp is responsible for council-wide management of all aspects of the Girl Scout leadership program in outdoor / camp settings.   He or she ensures that camp program experiences are based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and customized to meet the needs and interests of girls. Programs should be offered in a short-term flexible format, and implemented to meet designated outcomes. He or she is also responsible for recruiting and supporting volunteers in support outdoor / camp programs and achieve planned outcomes.  

Responsibilities:

·        Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate camp/outdoor program opportunities regionally. 

·        Recruit and retain volunteers to serve as GSLE (Girl Scout Leadership Experience) Coordinators Camp/Outdoor Program (regionally). 

o       Work with GSLE Coordinators Camp/Outdoor Program to recruit and retain Camp Advisors.

o       Work with the local GSLE Coordinators Camp/Outdoor Program and Camp Advisors to ensure all program offerings align to current Girl Scout programs and desired outcomes. 

o       Work with the GSLE Coordinators Camp/Outdoor Program to ensure program offerings are relevant to the interests of the girls being served.

·        Serve as the Oak Spring Day Camp Director

o       Plan and direct the operation of summer camp, meeting the standards for leadership, program activities, and health and safety. Coordinate camp activities and schedules.

o       Recruit and train day camp staff

o       Maintain ACA standards and accreditation

o       Coordinate evaluation and planning; file reports; oversee budget

·        Work with the other Direct Service staff in the development, marketing, and implementation of new Camp/Outdoor programs.

·        Be guided in all actions by the Girl Scout Mission, Promise, and Law.

·        Remain informed about and comply with the most current policies, procedures, and guidelines of Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ (GSCSNJ) and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA).

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

            A Bachelor’s degree preferred; or equivalent work experience.

 

EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 2-3 years experience in volunteer management, program planning; Girl Scout experience preferred. 
  • At least 3 years experience in a supervisory role in a summer camp setting.
  • Minimum 25 years of age
  • Knowledge of NJ Youth Camp Safety and Board of Health Standards

SKILLS:

  • Outstanding written and oral skills.
  • Competence in budget management
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently; manage multiple priorities, creatively solve problems, and foster a pluralistic environment. 
  • Flexibility, creativeness, and self-motivated.
  • Subscribes to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement; Girl Scout experience helpful. Have the ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with key community leaders
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and provide own transportation for travel within the council jurisdiction.
  • Successful experience in recruiting, training and supervising volunteers

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

            Administrative volunteers.

 
EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Incumbent must be fully computer literate and able to use various software programs, i.e., Word processing. 

The incumbent must have the ability to operate other office machines such as fax, calculator, and business telephones.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

   The position requires:

·           Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.

·           Some bending and stooping required. 

·           Able to work in an outdoor environment for most of the day.

·           Manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other office equipment.

·           Ability to read numbers, reports, and computer terminals.

·           Hearing within normal range for telephone use. Occasional high stress work may be required in dealing with volunteers/staff.

 

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS:

 

   The incumbent:

·           Must be able to react favorably in all work situations.

·           Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people.

·           Is frequently called upon to handle difficult situations.

·           Be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action for the council at any given point in time.

·           Handle novel and diverse work problems on a daily basis.

·           Have emotional stability and personal maturity

·           Must be able to analyze causes of interpersonal conflict and resolve complex communications issues (i.e., undefined roles, objectives, and information gaps).

·           Ability to listen to people, perceive the real problems, and bring issues to a successful conclusion.

·           Have the ability to give, receive, and analyze information, formulate work plans, prepare written materials, articulate goals, and action plans.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Evening and/or weekend work is required.  Assigned office is located in Middlesex County.
7 weeks of on-site summer day camp, Monday-Friday is required. Camp is located in Somerset County.

The job requires frequent travel.

Valid driver’s license and automobile

GSUSA Membership
